Territory
Postcode territory planning for UK sales teams
8 min readUpdated 15 August 2026
UK postcodes give you a ready-made hierarchy for territory: area, district, sector, unit. Used properly, it removes almost all territory arguments, because every patch has a name that everyone recognises.
The UK postcode hierarchy, and which level to allocate at
| Level | Example | Rough scale | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Area | SN | Dozens of districts | Regional ownership |
| District | SN25 | Thousands to tens of thousands of addresses | Agency allocation |
| Sector | SN25 2 | Hundreds to low thousands of addresses | Team workbooks |
| Unit | SN25 2QT | About 15 delivery points | Individual routing and suppression |
Allocate districts to agencies, sectors to teams
Give an agency whole districts so they can plan a week, then let their managers cut sector-level workbooks inside those districts for daily work. Allocating at the wrong level is what produces both overlap and under-coverage.
Every allocation needs an owner and an expiry. Areas that were handed out eighteen months ago and never released are dead stock.
Balance patches on density, not on map area
Two districts of identical geographic size can differ by a factor of ten in delivery points. Balance on address count and housing type, and account for travel: a rural sector with 400 addresses spread over twelve miles is not equivalent to an urban sector with 400 addresses on eight streets.
- Count delivery points per sector before allocating
- Separate residential from business addresses if your campaign only sells to one
- Flag high-rise and multi-occupancy postcodes — the door count is much higher than the map suggests
- Keep a live view of which patches have been worked recently, so re-runs are deliberate
Layer in data to prioritise, not to replace judgement
Public UK datasets let you rank sectors before you spend a day in them. Energy Performance Certificate data indicates property age, heating type and efficiency band; HM Land Registry Price Paid data indicates values and turnover; Indices of Deprivation indicate affordability. Used together they tell you which sectors to work first — not who will buy.
Frequently asked questions
- How many postcode districts are there in the UK?
- There are roughly 2,976 postcode districts in the UK, sitting inside around 120 postcode areas, and covering approximately 1.8 million individual postcodes and more than 33 million delivery points.
- What is the difference between a postcode district and a sector?
- A district is the outward part of the postcode, such as SN25. A sector adds the first digit of the inward part, such as SN25 2, and is usually the right size for a team's daily canvassing workbook.
